Stronger Together: Inside Aspen Total Fitness with Daniel Deskins

Since August of 2024, I've had the honor of photographing and working alongside Aspen Total Fitness. Aspen is more than just a gym, it's a space where grit, growth, and genuine community collide. Nestled in Roanoke, Virginia, Aspen was founded by Daniel Deskins, a man whose story and vision have transformed not only his facility, but the lives of those inside it.

A Gym with Grit, and Heart

Aspen Total Fitness wasn't born from a business plan. It was born from longing. "I wanted to create the kind of gym I always wished existed," Daniel shares. "One that puts people first, doesn't compromise on equipment, and fosters a community where strength, discipline, and growth are part of the culture."

That vision took root after Daniel's 20 year career in the Marine Corps, where physical fitness wasn't just routine, it was survival. That structured mindset, coupled with years of coaching and gym operations post retirement, shaped the foundation for Aspen: a place that blends discipline with heart.

More Than a Workout

Aspen isn't about quick fixes or trends. "We focus on results," Daniel says. "No egos, no fluff. Just hard work and real support." Whether you're a seasoned lifter or just stepping into strength training for the first time, Aspen welcomes those who train with intention and want to become better, physically and mentally.

And while the barbells and equipment are top tier, it's the people who set this gym apart. Daniel beams when he talks about the culture his members have helped build. "One of our members was in a hard season," he remembers. "Other members stepped in, checking on them, offering rides, showing up. That member later told me it wasn't the workouts that got them through, it was the community."

Aspen: A Name with a Story

You might assume the name "Aspen" comes from nature or some lofty metaphor. Not quite. "I originally had another name in mind, but trademark issues led me to change it," Daniel laughs. "So I named it after my dog. People like her more than they like me, and I'm okay with that."

It's that mix of humor, humility, and honesty that runs deep in Aspen's DNA.

Purpose-Driven, Community-Fueled

Ask Daniel what motivates him as a lifter and a business owner, and his answer is the same: progress. "I love watching people show up, put in the work, and change their lives. Whether it's a new PR or rebuilding confidence, that growth is what drives me."

That same passion flows into how Aspen is run. Staff are chosen based on values, not just resumes. Events and community efforts aren't an afterthought, they're essential. "We intentionally build culture through conversations, check-ins, and shared goals," he explains. "Everyone is expected to contribute to the community, not just consume it."

Looking Ahead

Aspen isn't slowing down. Plans are underway to expand training offerings, explore new recovery and performance spaces, and host more events that bring the community together. "We want to deepen our impact. Not just grow in size, but in strength," Daniel shares.

And if you're new? The doors are open.

"All you have to do is walk in," he says. "No pressure. Just a real conversation about your goals and how we can support you."
